Bunga arrived at the centre in West Kalimantan in November 2009. She was about 2½ years old. Her story is similar to that of many other rescued orangutans: a family phoned the centre and asked the rescue team to go and pick her up from their house. They claimed to have found Bunga three months earlier and had decided to keep her. They kept her in a cage in the garden of the house but apparently occasionally let her out. When she was first rescued, she was rather cautious and rarely left her caregiver’s side. However she gradually became increasingly independent and made a friend for life in Cindy, a female of Bunga’s age who was rescued in February 2010. The two girls are both competent climbers and spend most of their time not far apart from each other.

During 2010 little Bunga suffered a series of mild infections and fevers, perhaps because her immune system had become suppressed while living in the unnatural environment of her early years. However she remained healthy and developed normally throughout 2011. Bunga is part of the group of young orangutans who thrive in the large play area that was finished last year. Together with her old friends Melky and Cindy, she shares the space with Mac, Lasmi, Mimi, Momo, Pinoh and Pungky. Here they have enough space to climb high and low and, although Bunga still prefers the company of Cindy, she gets along very well with all the others. One could almost say she plays the “baby sister” role in the group - one of the smallest in size, always playing around and bringing the others in on her games. No one is ever able to stay mad with her for long. These days she is a cheeky infant of between 4 and 5 years old, with a healthy appetite and gaining weight steadily.
