Dear
I am an Australian citizen that has recently become aware of a proposal from your company, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) to clear rainforest in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem in Sumatra through various media coverage in Australia.
I understand that PT Rimba Hutani Mas are seeking to convert the concession area of Dalek Hutani Esa (33.776 ha) to a pulp and paper plantation. The conversion of this precious area would severely damage the orangutan habitat and would ultimately compromise the successful establishment of a sustainable orangutan population in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem - located in the district of Tebo inside the former Dalek Hutani Esa logging concession.
Over 100 orangutans have been released to date via the Bukit Tigapuluh Sumatran Orangutan re-introduction project – the only re-introduction site for this critically endangered species who share 97% of their DNA with humans.
Very recently APP made public claims about leading wildlife conservation in the area. In fact the company is now jeopardizing the safety of local communities, such as the indigenous 'Orang Rimba' and pushing the critically endangered Sumatran orangutans, Sumatran tigers and Sumatran elephants closer to local extinction.
It is astonishing that you continue your relentless push into the forest while allegedly ignoring the needs of not just one, but many, critically-endangered species. That is not to mention the local forest-dwelling tribal communities, who are faced with increasing marginalization as a result of rapid ongoing deforestation.
The Asia Pulp and Paper proposal also ignores the fact that your proposed land-use for this critical forest buffer zone surrounding the National Park will dramatically increase global carbon emissions through deforestation.
We implore APP to be an environmentally responsible global citizen, as you claim to be, and withdraw the request to convert the concession area of Dalek Hutani Esa. There are many individuals and groups in Australia who contribute funds for the protection of the endangered species within Bukit Tigapuluh and consider it a matter of national concern for our present and future generations. I am one.
Yours faithfully
