Orangutan Care & Quarantine Centre Appeal

Created 15th Nov 2005
The current unprecedented slaughter of orangutans in Central Kalimantan in the wake of forest clearing for new palm oil plantations is overwhelming the Orangutan Care & Quarantine Centre. Staff are using the food from their own gardens to keep the Centre running. The Centre is near breaking point!

The AOP appeals for donations to assist our Orangutan Care & Quarantine Centre, which is currently overwhelmed with orphaned, injured and ex-captive orangutan infants. Whilst the AOP has provided funding for some expenses from the Adoption Programme, more funds are needed to cope with the extra influx.

Orphaned and traumatized when their mothers are killed by illegal logging and rainforest clearing for palm oil plantations, the survival and rehabilitation of these infants (and the species) depends upon the care of veterinarians and dedicated staff and the provision of quality food, medicines and accommodation.

This is only possible with your vital financial contribution.

AOP aims to provide immediate funding to help support:

  • the veterinary facility which provides treatment for new arrivals and the injured or ill;
  • the quarantine facility which segregates new or contagious orangutans from the general population;
  • the dormitory facilities which houses orangutans at night;
  • the forest compound where infants are taken and taught foraging, nesting and survival skills.

"A society is measured by the way it treats those at its mercy. If we allow our closest living relatives to become extinct during our generation, we will diminish all humanity"
