Summary of Position
Australian Orangutan Project is Australia’s leader in orangutan conservation. Based in Perth WA, AOP has been conducting its conservation work for almost 12 years. Our goal is to increase our income to $2 million dollars over the next 2 years.
Our vision:
- To ensure the survival of Sumatran and Bornean orangutan species in their natural rainforest habitat and to promote the welfare of all orangutans.
Our mission:
- To secure long term, viable populations in the wild of both the Bornean and Sumatran Orangutans.
- To protect the welfare of all orangutans living both in the wild, rehabilitation sanctuaries, care centres, and captivity.
- To continue ongoing public education and awareness about the dangers of deforestation -to orangutan populations, and the wider global impact it will have.
As a member of the AOP Team, this position will be responsible for driving the communication, fundraising and corporate ambitions of AOP on a national scale and taking the AOP profile and brand to the next level to achieve media, communications and corporate fundraising objectives.
Primary Responsibilities
- Establish, implement and monitor a National Communications Strategy and budget in accordance with AOP’ Strategic Plan.
- Develop a National Corporate approach strategy to communicate AOP awareness, environmental, conservation and education outcome to achieve responsible and financial support from corporate sector for AOP
- Provide media training for the organization and high level media and communications advice to the Director and Executive Team.
- Develop and maintain fundraising relationships in within existing membership database to achieve high level or adoption and membership retention.
- Oversee the production of corporate publications, newsletters, the AOP website and intranet site and corporate event management in conjunction with the It and Design Development team.
- Staff Management and Development.
- Other tasks as directed by the Committee.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Substantial experience and an established track record in sales, public relations, communications, fundraising and marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, and experience in establishing and developing a comprehensive plan of communications activities on a national scale.
- Proven ability to develop innovative and fresh approaches to make a public relations and fundraising programs unique and memorable.
- Excellent communication and writing skills and demonstrated skills in managing of the production of corporate documents such as annual reports, newsletters and on line content.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including donors, sponsors, supporters, media, government agencies, community groups, academics and the general public.
- Demonstrated management skills and the ability to lead a small nationally based team to produce high quality results.
Desirable
- High level computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Desktop Publishing programs and a sound understanding of website Content Management Systems.
- Experience and understanding of how to successfully work in and approach the corporate sector on all levels to achieve AOP goals.
- Understanding of environment and conservation issues relating to the plight of the orangutan.
